You know the guy, maybe you are the guy, heck I was the guy.  I’m talking about the survival geek all concerned about being prepared for any situation that comes along but he’s hauling around a 300 pound frame, built for comfort and not for speed.

Does your current condition make you a liability?

Once we point this out it’s obvious that there is a disconnect.  You can have all kinds of gear but if you can’t move it or you body isn’t in shape then it’s hypocritical to admonish others for not being prepared in other areas.

Depending on your situation, what you perceive as likely threats and your abilities your physical baseline will be different.  It’s good for us to establish a baseline in physical fitness.  Acknowledging you might have your own goals let’s throw some out anyways.

Physical Baseline

  1. 2 pull-ups
  2. 50 push-ups
  3. Walk for 3 miles with a 30 pound pack

If you’re already in this kind of shape, great, go further.  If you’re not you should focus improving yourself.  I’d go so far as to say that you should make this your number one preparedness project until you meet the physical baseline.

It’s important to have something to point to when you’re improving yourself.  If you don’t have goals then you don’t know where you’re going and you don’t know when you get there.  If these goals don’t work for you then establish others and meet them.

If you’re like most people that are out of shape this is going to amount to losing weight.  You also need to exercise to get the upper body strength to do the pull-ups and push-ups.  If you truly are a survivor then you have the discipline inside you to control what goes in your face.  Now is the time to develop that discipline, to make sure you got it.  Otherwise you’re all talk in your XXXL utilities.
